Iron is a mineral which is required for the function of haemoglobin, which transports oxygen in the blood, and is also vital for other processes in the body including energy production, muscle development, digestion, immunity and regulating your body temperature. Iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, symptoms of which include brittle nails, mouth sores, thinning hair and heart palpitations.
Red meat (beef, lamb and pork) are good sources of iron. Plant-based sources of iron include pulses and legumes, dark green vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli, and nuts and seeds. Iron supplements can be beneficial for those who find it hard to consume enough iron through their diet, for example vegans and vegetarians. Pregnant women, women of menstruating age and children have higher iron requirements.
