Perimenopause is the first stage of the menopause process that can last around 8-10 years before a woman enters menopause itself, where she completely stops having a menstrual period. The menopause is when a woman has not had a period for 12 months, at this age hormones become consistently low. The average age for menopause is between 45 and 55.

Postmenopause is the time after a 12 month cessation of periods where hormones will remain largely low, normally occurring for women aged 50 and older.

During the perimenopause, levels of oestrogen in the body begin to rise and fall unevenly, causing your menstrual cycle to lengthen or shorten.
